Kobe launched the Medical Industry Development Project in 1998, constructing a base of R&D activities for advanced medicine on the City ' s Port Island , as a cluster of medical industry, a typical growth industry of the 21 st century, where government-academia-industry interact and collaborate.
At present 11 core research facilities, such as Institute of Biomedical Research and Innovation (IBRI), Riken Center for Developmental Biology (CDB), Riken Molecular Imaging R&D Center, are operating in the Kobe Life Science Cluster and a few more facilities of importance are now being introduced, including Riken Next-generation Supercomputer and New Kobe City General Hospital. These world top-class research facilities and private companies gathering in the cluster one after another, now reaching over 150 companies, are engaged in energetic interactions and collaborations in translational research in regeneration medicine, development of new scientific discovery for therapeutic agents, development of new medical instruments etc. This Kobe Medical Industry Development Project is regarded not only as a municipal enterprise for local development but also as a national project of Japan.

The Foundation for Biomedical Research and Innovation (FBRI) has played a central role to promote the Kobe Medical Industry Development Project through its versatile activities, including the operation of the Institute of Biomedical Research and Innovation, communications among different research facilities, promotion of interactions between the research facilities and private companies, support of health care of the citizens, thereby contributing to development of advanced medical technology which serves to the health and welfare of the general public. FBRI ' s energetic activities since its establishment in 2000 have resulted in installment of more than 10 core research facilities and relocation of more than 150 private companies into the cluster ( in Port Island Stage II Zone) in addition to 4 universities (in Port Island Stage I Zone), which, as a whole, are constituting a life science cluster active in advanced research.

21 st century is expected to be an age of intelligence. In addition to hardware (manufacturing) technologies, more importance will be placed on software (intelligence)

technologies. We sincerely hope that the Kobe Medical Industry Development Project, which aims to establish a great source of intelligence for life science and to help create a healthy society, will contribute to the development of Kobe City and the welfare of the citizens.
